OLD ORCHARD BEACH HIGH SCHOOL STATEMENT
OF PHILOSOPHY
The task of education is a responsibility
shared by teachers, students, parents/guardians,
administrators, staff, and the community. The essential
elements of this responsibility are effective
communication, mutual trust, and respect.
We believe that learning is a continuous process. A
meaningful high school education is critical to the
future of all students and the realization of their
potential.
We believe that the school and community have a
responsibility to create an awareness and appreciation
of: the cultural heritage of all people, the complexity
of the physical environment, the impact of technology,
and the structure of our democratic system. We further
believe that students must understand the global nature
of the economy, the environment, and society.
Beyond stressing the mastery of basic communication and
problem solving skills, the school must encourage the
students to think clearly, reason objectively, and
analyze accurately. We believe that creative expression
and inquiry must be encouraged in all students.
We believe that students learn best in a challenging,
positive environment that includes both theory and
practical application. This environment is created by a
relevant curriculum, clearly stated and consistently
applied policies, varied activities, and a caring
atmosphere, where all people and ideas are respected and
valued.
We recognize that the abilities and expectations of our
students differ widely. In order for students to achieve
success and develop life skills, we believe that they
should acquire a body of knowledge, and specific
abilities and concepts, as well as values and attitudes.
We believe that the individuality of all students must be
respected and supported. We further believe that all
students must develop a sense of personal responsibility,
direction, and self worth. By making students aware of
their responsibilities and privileges in society, we seek
to prepare them for roles as active citizens.
We believe that the school philosophy, goals, and
programs must be reviewed on a regular basis and revised
to meet the changing needs of the students, the
community, and society.
