
COURSE
DESCRIPTIONS
BAND 1 credit
Band is open to all instrumental performers. Musical
skills are reinforced and developed through the intensive
study of a variety of band compositions. Opportunities
are available for extra-curricular participation in
marching band, jazz band, solo and ensemble contests and
other state music festivals.
MUSIC THEORY I
1 credit
Any student wishing to learn the basics of reading,
writing and arranging music may take this course. It is
designed for those with little or no theory background.
Major components of the course will be (a) music
notation, (b) basic sight-reading and ear training, (c)
major and minor scales, (d) simple melody writing, and
(e) simple harmonization. Basic piano keyboarding skills
are also taught.
MUSIC THEORY II
1 credit
Open to all students who have had music theory training.
Major components of the course will be (a) sight singing
and ear training, (b) arranging for small instrumental
and vocal groups, and (c) advanced harmony and melody
writing.
CHORUS
1 credit
Chorus is open to all vocal performers. Students are
taught to read music and understand its basic elements
through singing. Musical skills are reinforced and
developed through the intensive study of a variety of
vocal compositions.
PIANO & GUITAR CLASS
1 credit
Students are taught to read music and understand its
basic elements (rhythm, melody, harmony, and form)
through learning to play the piano and guitar. Theory and
composition will also be a major focus of this course.
MUSIC APPRECIATION
1/2 credit
This course is designed to increase the student's
understanding and awareness of the expressive qualities
of music. The course will include a survey of music
history, covering major composers and important
compositions of each era and emphasizing contemporary
styles, jazz and musical theater.
MUSIC CPR
(Creating-Performing-Responding to Music) 1/2 credit
This class is designed to develop students' knowledge
and skills in all areas of music. Through the use of folk
songs from various cultures and countries, the following
activities will be emphasized:
1. Singing
2. Performing on instruments
3. Improvising melodies, variations
and
accompaniments
4. Composing and arranging music
5. Reading and notating music
6. Listening to, analyzing and
describing music
7. Evaluating music and musical
performances
8. Discovering relationships between
music and the other arts and disciplines
9. Discovering relationships between
music and history and culture
PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
1/2 credit
Open to percussionists only. Musical skills are
reinforced and developed through the intensive study of a
variety of percussion ensemble compositions.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Individual instruction on any musical instrument, from
beginning to advanced levels by arrangement with the
instructor.
