The Old Orchard Beach School Department employs two full-time Certified School Nurses, one Health Aide, and a School Health Coordinator in the Health Services Department servicing all three schools. The school nurses provide: nursing care and assessments, health education, identification of health and safety concerns, health counseling, interventions, and referrals to appropriate school staff and physicians. The School Health Coordinator serves as a school liaison to school/community health advocacy committees, coordinates the staff health and wellness team, and coordinates the School Health program. Health screenings provided by the Health Services Department are vision and hearing screenings in grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and on a referral basis in other grades. Scoliosis screening is done in grades 6 and 8 for girls, and grade 8 for boys. A dental health program is offered to students in grades K-6. Students receive weekly flouride rinses with parental and/or guardian permission. Parents are advised to keep children home if they have a temperature or have been ill during the night. If a child has a communicable disease, he/she must be seen by a physician and checked by the school nurse before returning to class. Diseases such as chicken pox, impetigo, mumps, strep throat, and rashes are examples. Parents are asked to report any cases of headlice directly to the school nurse. The school nurses periodically check students for headlice, and they inform parents when appropriate treatment is indicated. Medication is not issued to students unless an appropriate medication form is filled out by the parent, signed by the parent or guardian, verified and signed by the school nurse. Students are not allowed to keep any medication in their possession. All medication must be in the original container. All medicine not registered in the school nurse's office is considered an illegal drug and dealt with accordingly. This policy is followed in order to ensure the safety of all students. The school nurses are also available by appointment for conferences with parents, teachers, and students for health, family life education and substance abuse issues. For more information about school health services at Jameson School, grades K-3, contact Jan Clark, R.N., at 934-2891, Fax: 934-3710, or email [email protected] For more information about school health services at Loranger Middle School, grades 4-8, and Old Orchard Beach High School, grades 9-12, contact Karen Ledew, R.N., B.S. , at 934-4848, Fax 934-3712, or email [email protected] For information about the Old Orchard Beach High School Players, Natural Helpers, and the Old Orchard Beach Communities for Children, contact Jackie Tselikis, R.N., M.S.Ed., School Health Coordinator at 934-4848, Fax: 934-3712, or email [email protected] |
